NEWS FROM THE CHAIRMAN’S DESK:

  • Time again for a newsletter so as long as we are in the winter season I will explain some about snowplowing and what we do. The town is of course bordered by other towns, so only half of the border roads belong to Green Valley. On the east we are bordered by State highway 32. On the north we border with Town of Gillett. We have an agreement with them as to who plows what. Gillett plows from Hwy 32 to Cty Rd BB. Green Valley plows west of BB and we do the portion of Flat Rock road that lies in the Town of Gillett. On the south we border Town of Angelica. There are 4 miles of road there and we each do 2 miles of that road.
  • The Town of Green Valley has 50.7 miles of road, so when we are plowing we do 101 miles of road. At 25 miles an hour and cleaning up corners it takes a while. Your patience is appreciated and we ask that you give all snowplows all the room you can. The vision is not the best with the wing and plow to watch.
  • While on the subject of roads, the board asks all residents to watch for items discarded in our ditches. Some of the items we have picked out of ditches this fall have been 2 mattresses, 1 transmission, 4 sheets of asbestos, numerous tires, and there are many deer carcasses.

Town of Green Valley Mailbox (Roadside Receptacles) Replacement Policy:

This policy addresses the Town of Green Valley’s policy regarding mailboxes and roadside receptacles damaged as a result of the Town’s road operations.
Mailboxes and roadside receptacles are defined as any container used for the delivery of mail, newspapers, advertising circulars, or other printed material, along any town road right-of-way.
The mailbox or receptacle base should be placed two feet from the back of the shoulder of the road; the bottom of the box should be 41” – 45” above the road surface, and the front of the box shall not extend beyond the back of the shoulder of the road. The mailbox or receptacle base should be able to withstand flying snow and slush from traffic and snowplows.
According to the Division of Highways and Transportation Department there are several alternative methods for installing single mailboxes: An acceptable support for a mailbox includes wood posts 4” x 4” square or 4.5” in diameter. Soft metal conduits, which are 1.5” to 2.5” in diameter, are also acceptable. These supports should be embedded no more than 24” into the ground. These are additional support systems that allow the mailbox to swing if struck. On either of these two types of supports a mailbox may be mounted.
If a mailbox or receptacle base is damaged by flying snow or slush, the Town of Green Valley will not replace it. Any mailbox or base damaged by slush or heavy snow will be investigated by one of the Supervisors of the Town of Green Valley or their representative.
If a mailbox is physically hit and damaged by a snowplow or other piece of equipment, it will be replaced with a metal or plastic box acceptable to the U.S. Postal Service costing up to $10.00 only. Decorative or other types of ornamental mailboxes will not be replaced in kind.
